First visit

Your first time at a dispensary in Clovis

No secret handshake required. Here's exactly how a visit goes at Factory Direct on W 7th St, from the ID check to the bag in your hand.

Your first time at a dispensary can feel like walking into a bar where everybody already knows the drinks. It's really not like that. Plenty of people start out right where you are, asking "so what's the difference between an indica and a sativa?" at the counter. This guide walks through a visit to our Clovis dispensary step by step, so you show up knowing what to expect.

What to bring your first time at a dispensary

  • A valid government photo ID showing you're 21 or older. It needs to be current, not expired.
  • Your order number if you ordered ahead online.
  • A rough budget. Prices on the menu are before tax, and New Mexico adds a cannabis excise tax plus gross receipts tax at checkout.
  • Your questions. Seriously. Write them in your phone's notes app if that helps.

You don't need a medical card, a New Mexico license or an appointment.

The ID check

Adult-use cannabis is 21 and over in New Mexico, so we check ID every visit. It doesn't matter if you're 22 or 72; we'll ask. It's quick and it's not personal. Out-of-state IDs are fine; adults from any state can buy here. If you've got something unusual, like a temporary paper license, call (575) 935-4270 first and ask.

If you bring a friend, they need to be 21 and carry ID too. Leave under-21 friends at home, even if they just want to tag along.

Our live menu is updated by the shop, so it shows what's actually in stock right now. It's sorted into six categories, and each product lists a few things worth knowing:

  • Type: indica, sativa, hybrid or CBD. Think of these as loose labels people use to describe a strain's general vibe, not a guarantee of how it'll feel for you.
  • THC and CBD: shown as a percentage for flower and concentrates, and in milligrams for edibles.
  • Size: flower usually comes in grams, eighths (3.5 g), quarters and up. Edibles list total milligrams per package.
  • Price: before tax. Sale prices show up automatically, and you can check this week's deals too.

New Mexico caps a single purchase at 2 ounces of cannabis, 16 grams of concentrate and 800 mg of edibles. Our cart keeps count, so you can't go over by accident. The full rundown is in our New Mexico cannabis laws guide.

Picking a product type

The biggest decision for a first-timer isn't the strain. It's the format. Here's the quick version:

  • Pre-rolls are ready to smoke. No grinder, no papers, no gear. Easy first buy.
  • Flower is the classic bud in a jar. You'll need a pipe or papers and a grinder from the smoke shop side.
  • Vape carts screw onto a 510-thread battery. Discreet, low smell, and you control how much you take.
  • Edibles are gummies, chocolates and drinks. No smoke at all, but they work very differently (more below).
  • Concentrates like wax and rosin are strong and need a dab rig. Most people work up to these.
  • CBD products are made for people who want little or no THC.

Start low with edibles

Check the label for milligrams per piece, not just per package. A 100 mg bag of gummies might be ten 10 mg pieces, and plenty of people cut one in half to start. Eat something first, don't mix with alcohol, and plan to be home with nowhere to drive. If you're unsure, ask us to point out lower-dose options.

How to talk to the budtender

You don't need the lingo. Tell us what you're after in normal words and we'll translate. Things that actually help:

  • "It's my first time" or "it's been years." No judgment, and it changes what we'd point you toward.
  • How you want to take it: smoke, vape, eat, or not sure yet.
  • What you want to spend.
  • What you liked or didn't like before, if you have any history.

We can tell you how products are labeled, how people describe them and how formats compare. We're not doctors, so we won't tell you a product will fix a health problem. If that's your question, a medical provider is the right person.

Order ahead and paying at pickup

You can walk in, but ordering ahead is easier, especially the first time. Build your order on the menu, pick a pickup time (the earliest slot is about 20 minutes out), and enter your name and phone number. No account is required, though members currently earn rewards points on picked-up orders.

When you arrive, show your ID and give us your name or order number. You pay at pickup, in the store. Payment options can change, so if you want to know what's accepted before you come, just call and ask.

Dispensary etiquette

  • Pull up the menu on your phone all you want, but keep other customers out of your photos.
  • Don't open products in the store or right outside it.
  • If there's a line, have your ID out and your questions ready, and don't feel rushed. Good questions are part of the job.

After you buy

Keep everything in its sealed, original packaging for the drive home, and put the bag somewhere you can't reach it, like the trunk. Using cannabis in a car is illegal whether it's moving or parked, and so is driving high. Public use isn't allowed either; smoking in public is a $50 fine. Home, on private property, is the move.

And if you're visiting from out of state, everything you buy stays in New Mexico. Crossing the state line with it breaks federal law, and possession is illegal in Texas.

Questions people ask

Do I need a medical card for my first time at a dispensary?

No. In New Mexico, anyone 21 or older can buy from a licensed dispensary with a valid government photo ID. No card, no application.

Can I go to a dispensary in Clovis if I live in Texas?

Yes. Adults 21 and older from any state can shop with a valid photo ID. Everything you buy has to stay in New Mexico, though. See our guide for Texas visitors.

How do I pay at Factory Direct?

You pay in the store when you pick up, whether you ordered ahead or walked in. Payment options can change, so call the shop at (575) 935-4270 if you want to know what is accepted before you come.

How long should I wait after eating an edible?

Edibles take longer to kick in than smoking. A common rule of thumb is to start with a small serving and wait at least two hours before deciding whether to have more.

Can I bring a friend who is under 21?

Leave them at home. Cannabis sales are 21 and up, and you should expect everyone in your group to be asked for ID.
