Visiting from Lubbock, Amarillo, Hereford or Muleshoe? Here’s what to bring, what you can buy, and the rules that come with it.

A dispensary near the Texas border, with a head shop inside

Coming from West Texas? Factory Direct is a licensed dispensary near the Texas border, about 15 minutes past the Texico–Farwell state line at 321 W 7th St, Clovis, NM 88101. There are a few shops right on the line in Texico if all you want is the very first stop. The extra few miles to Clovis get you a bigger stop: a full dispensary and a head shop in one building, a live menu you can order from ahead of time, and hours that run until 10pm Monday through Saturday.

This page covers the practical stuff, and it’s honest about the one rule that matters most for Texans: what you buy here stays in New Mexico.

What you need

  • Be 21 or older. No exceptions, no matter who you’re with.
  • A valid, unexpired government photo ID. Texas and other out-of-state driver’s licenses and state IDs are accepted.
  • No medical card. New Mexico sells adult-use cannabis to visitors.
  • If you ordered ahead, bring the ID of the person whose name is on the order.

What Texans can buy at a New Mexico dispensary

Visitors shop the same menu as locals: flower, pre-rolls, vape carts, edibles, concentrates and CBD. State limits per purchase:

2 oz
cannabis flower
16 g
concentrate
800 mg
THC in edibles

Cannabis excise tax plus gross receipts tax is added at the register. See the FAQ for current rates.

Where you can and can’t use it

In New Mexico, cannabis is for private property, with the owner’s permission. Using it in public is illegal, and smoking in public comes with a $50 fine. Streets, sidewalks and parks all count as public.

Not in the car. Roads count as public places, so no using it in a vehicle, whether you’re driving or riding along. Keep your purchase sealed in its original packaging, and never drive impaired. If you plan to partake, plan to stay put.

Hotels: check your hotel’s policy before you book. Lots of hotels and rentals in town are smoke-free, and some don’t allow cannabis at all.

It stays in New Mexico

Cannabis bought in New Mexico has to stay in New Mexico. Taking it into Texas is illegal under Texas law, and crossing a state line with it breaks federal law too. That’s true for any amount, sealed or not, including on the short hop through the Texico–Farwell crossing.

We won’t help plan around that, and we’d rather you didn’t risk it. Enjoy it here, legally, and drive home sober.

The smoke shop side

Half the store is a head shop: glass pipes and bongs, dab rigs, batteries and devices, and papers, grinders and trays. These are legal accessories in New Mexico and we sell them to adults 21 and over. We can’t give legal advice about other states’ rules.

Questions from Texas visitors

The full dispensary FAQ and our New Mexico cannabis laws guide go deeper.

What’s the closest dispensary to Lubbock?

Texas doesn’t have adult-use dispensaries, so the nearest ones are across the line in New Mexico. Texico and Clovis, about 90 to 100 miles west of Lubbock on US-84, are among the closest. Hobbs, to the southwest, is a similar drive. Factory Direct is in downtown Clovis, about 15 minutes past the state line.

What’s the closest dispensary to Amarillo?

From Amarillo, Clovis is roughly 105 miles southwest by way of Canyon and Hereford on US-60, about an hour and 45 minutes. Tucumcari, west on I-40, is a similar distance.

Can I buy cannabis in New Mexico with a Texas driver’s license?

Yes. Any adult 21 or older can buy from a licensed New Mexico dispensary with a valid, unexpired government photo ID. A Texas driver’s license or state ID works fine. You don’t need a medical card.

Can I take cannabis back to Texas?

No. Cannabis bought in New Mexico has to stay in New Mexico. Possession is illegal under Texas law, and carrying cannabis across a state line also breaks federal law, even in small amounts and even in sealed packaging. That includes the crossing at Texico and Farwell.

Do out-of-state visitors have different purchase limits?

No. Visitors follow the same New Mexico limits as residents: 2 ounces of flower, 16 grams of concentrate and 800 mg of THC in edibles per purchase.

Check with your hotel first. Many hotels and short-term rentals ban smoking of any kind, and some ban cannabis use entirely. Using cannabis in public, including on the street or in a vehicle, is illegal in New Mexico.
